“Taqlid” is, in general, a term used to denote the conformity of less knowledgeable people to more knowledgeable people.
For example, the average Muslim must conform to the body of religious jurists when they deem a particular action haram, even though the average Muslim in question does not himself know the various pieces of evidence that led to such a ruling.
When it comes to Islamic Law (fiqh), taqlid is necessary. However, Muslim theologians state that every Muslim should sufficiently learn the rationale behind Muslim doctrine (aqidah).
